Job Description

Role overview

Brave Books publishes children's books and adult nonfiction books, many of which are built from creator content like YouTube videos and podcasts. We are seeking a Writer who understands how to turn ideas into narratives that resonate with readers. You will work with our creative director, editors, AI tools, and authors/creators to develop and refine manuscripts that are both creative and commercially successful.

What you'll do

  • Manuscript development and outlining: Take a creator's concept or a market opportunity and develop it into a structured outline. For children's books, understand story structure (Pixar template, problem-solution, journey). For adult nonfiction, identify the narrative throughline that makes information stick.
  • Writing and rewriting: Draft sections, full chapters, entire manuscripts, and occasionally ghostwrite. Know when to write fast and when to slow down and craft. Rewrite based on feedback from creative directors, editors, and authors/creators.
  • Editing and line editing: Work on manuscripts at different stages, including rough draft editing, substantive editing, and line editing. Understand the difference and when to apply each.
  • Collaboration with creators: Interview content creators, extract their voice, maintain their authenticity, and shape raw ideas into structured narratives. Act as a translator between their world and the book world.
  • Working with AI tools: Utilize AI tools like Claude for content generation and ideation. Brief AI, review and refine its output, maintain voice consistency, and determine when AI should lead versus when you should.
  • Genre flexibility: Write for children's picture books, early chapter books, and adult nonfiction, adapting your voice and approach based on format and audience.
  • Feedback and revision: Provide feedback on manuscripts, understand why something isn't working, and articulate how to fix it.

What we're looking for

  • Strong voice with flexibility: Possess a recognizable writing style that can be adapted to different genres and audiences, from children's books to authoritative adult nonfiction.
  • Storyteller first, technician second: Prioritize the story and reader engagement over perfect grammar.
  • Curiosity about your subjects: Willingness to research and deeply understand topics you may not be familiar with (e.g., fitness, parenting, business, history) to explain them clearly.
  • Comfort with collaboration and feedback: Be open to receiving and incorporating feedback from creators, editors, and leadership without taking it personally, viewing it as a tool for improvement.
  • Efficiency without rushing: Ability to write quickly when necessary, balancing speed with quality, and prioritizing voice, story, and clarity.

Bonus points

  • Publishing background
  • Children's book writing experience
  • Experience writing from/with subject matter experts
  • Content writing or copywriting background

Why you'd want this job

  • Write books that people actually read and see your work in print.
  • Collaborate with creators, editors, designers, and leadership.
  • Develop new skills across multiple genres.
  • See how your words drive revenue.
  • Prove the value of good writing in a commercial context.
