Role overview

W.W. Norton’s Subsidiary Rights department is seeking an intern for Fall 2026. This internship offers exposure to the full range of rights markets, both domestic and foreign, with particular emphasis on license renewal and research. The intern will undertake independent projects, gain valuable fluency in deal terms and contract language, assist in preparations for book fairs, and interact with licensees. The Rights department works with books across all Norton’s diverse trade imprints and College divisions.

the internship

W. W. Norton is looking for interns to participate in our twelve-week internship program. Our internship program provides participants with an engaging, supportive, and hands-on learning experience in publishing that includes educational lunch sessions and networking within the intern class.

Responsibilities

  • Answering rights queries from people all over the world in a timely and accurate manner
  • Communicating with and providing support to publishers of different formats and editions, including translations and audiobooks
  • Regular follow-up of contracts and advances, requiring close contact with domestic licensees and international subagents

Qualifications

  • College junior, senior, or recent graduate
  • Eager to improve verbal and written communication skills
  • Enjoy collaborating and working in a group to solve challenges
  • Passion for learning and ideas
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Global mindset and interest in how American books are published in other countries and languages, and how printed books become audiobooks

Compensation and Benefits

  • Paid at $17 per hour, subject to applicable law
  • Maximum of 20 hours weekly

Internship details

  • Internship period is twelve weeks from 9/14/2026 to 12/4/2026
  • Workday is 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time; specific work hours are flexible
  • This internship will be in-person in our Manhattan offices for those residing within commuting distance. Those in other locations will work remotely.
  • Eligibility to work with W.W. Norton & Company in the US is required.
