Role overview
Penguin Random House is the leading adult and children's publishing house globally. The Data Science team plays a crucial role in connecting books with their readers through recommendation systems, forecasting models, and AI-powered tools. We are seeking a Senior AI Solutions Engineer to develop the next generation of AI systems that will enhance operations. This role will focus on agentic applications, LLM-powered services, and the interfaces that integrate AI models and assistants with our internal data and tools. You will operate at the intersection of a world-class publishing business and the modern AI stack, with full ownership of your creations from development through to production.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate LLM-powered applications and services, including agentic workflows, retrieval/RAG systems, and classification pipelines, utilizing our catalog, sales, and operational data.
- Set up and maintain MCP servers and tool integrations to ensure safe and reliable connections between AI models, assistants, and our internal data systems.
- Own services end-to-end, encompassing architecture, implementation, deployment, evaluation, and monitoring within our AWS/Databricks environment.
- Evaluate emerging AI tooling and patterns, such as agent frameworks, MCP, evaluation harnesses, and new model capabilities. Conduct structured pilots and lead the adoption of effective solutions.
- Enhance the team's AI engineering capabilities by running working sessions, conducting internal demos, pair programming with scientists, and developing internal tools to accelerate AI usage.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience building and shipping production-quality software, with hands-on work in machine learning or AI systems.
- Experience setting up MCP servers or comparable tool-integration layers for AI assistants.
- Proficiency with cloud ML platforms (AWS, Databricks), model APIs (Bedrock, Anthropic, OpenAI), and vector databases.
- An advanced degree (MS/PhD) in computer science, machine learning, or a related quantitative field.
- Experience applying AI/ML to commercial problems such as demand forecasting, pricing, sales and marketing optimization, recommendation, or search.
- Background in media, publishing, or other content-rich domains.
- Demonstrated fluency with the current LLM stack, including retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings, prompt engineering, agentic patterns, and rigorous evaluation of generative systems.
- Strong Python engineering skills, including experience with version control, testing, and CI.
- Self-motivated with strong communication skills and a demonstrated ability to teach and mentor teammates.
Compensation and Benefits
- The salary range for this position is $180,000 to $220,000.
- All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
