Role overview
Macmillan Learning is piloting a new professional learning community for higher education instructors, focused on AI teaching practice and backed by a credentialing pathway. This initiative is designed to be validated with evidence before scaling. As Director, you will be a key operational leader, responsible for building the curriculum, establishing the community, recruiting and training facilitators, and setting up the artifact and peer-review pipeline for the Fall 2026 pilot launch. You will partner closely with the VP overseeing this initiative, influencing both the daily operations and the overall strategy.
Macmillan Learning is developing two interconnected initiatives: the AI Teaching Community, a facilitated professional learning community for higher education educators with a credentialing pathway, and the AI Mentor, an AI-powered reflective practice coach. The upcoming year is a validation phase for both. A pilot will be conducted, instrumented in advance, with evidence gathered to inform an investment decision at the end of the year. You will play a crucial role in building this evidence base from the ground up. This role operates in a dynamic environment where the plan evolves as the project progresses, and your judgment on curriculum, community, and data will significantly shape Macmillan Learning's future decisions.
Curriculum and credential design
- Build the evidence-based AI teaching curriculum, transforming briefs into delivered modules and preparing the async module set for content creators.
- Apply evidence-based practices, including backward design, scientific teaching, inclusive teaching, and universal design, to all module development.
- Own the credential framework, including badge structure, artifact requirements, rubrics, and the peer-review process, adapting it based on pilot evidence.
- Prepare curriculum documentation for external credential recognition review.
Community architecture and facilitator development
- Recruit, train, and support the founding facilitator cohort.
- Develop full session protocols from the facilitator guide outline.
- Design and deliver facilitator training, and build a facilitation ladder to serve as the community's growth loop.
Community operations and member experience
- Own the member onboarding sequence and the initial week experience through Session Zero.
- Manage the enrollment application process, including obtaining research and artifact license consent.
- Oversee the community's recognition and status systems.
Artifact pipeline and peer review
- Build the artifact pipeline end-to-end, from metadata completeness to review assignment outside the author's immediate network.
- Recruit, train, and calibrate the peer-reviewer bench, including external faculty reviewers, to ensure consistent badge recognition.
- Curate and grow the artifact library, and adjust the metadata schema based on member submissions.
Strategy, evidence, and cross-functional partnership
- Partner with the VP on strategic goals, planning, and the year-end recommendation for scaling, narrowing, or stopping the initiative.
- Run data collection against the initiative's five success measures, ensuring measurement precedes the pilot.
- Represent the initiative to partners in Product, Marketing, Engineering, and Sales, and be prepared to articulate the work in any forum.
What you'll bring
- A Master's degree in education, instructional design, learning sciences, educational technology, or a related field, with eight to ten years of directly related professional experience.
- A proven track record of designing, implementing, and evaluating curriculum at a program scale, beyond individual courses.
- Experience with faculty or professional development, including facilitating adult learners and coaching instructors on their teaching practices.
- Fluency in instructional design models and design thinking, such as ADDIE and backward design.
- Experience owning a project end-to-end in environments where the plan was not fully defined at the outset.
- Working knowledge of the evidence base in teaching and learning, with the ability to uphold these standards under deadline pressure.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to manage relationships respectfully and collaboratively across all levels of an organization.
Nice to have
- A Doctorate in education, instructional design, learning sciences, educational technology, or a related field.
