Role overview

We are currently seeking part-time CDL B Delivery Drivers to deliver book fairs out of our Strongsville, OH branch. Scholastic drivers are home every weekend and the majority of weeknights. In certain markets, drivers can expect one to two overnight routes per week during peak periods. If an overnight route is required, drivers will be provided with a choice of hotel accommodations and a $50 meal allowance.

Each year, Scholastic Book Fairs partners with schools across the country to host over 100,000 book-sale events. You could be part of the team ensuring that more than 35 million students and their families have access to thousands of affordable and educational products, fostering a lifelong love of reading.

Responsibilities

  • Work with supervisor to deliver and pick-up fairs in an efficient, cost-effective manner.
  • Work closely with supervisor to ensure customer service standards are maintained.
  • Load and unload trucks with or without the assistance of mechanical devices.
  • Effectively communicate routing problems to supervisor so changes can be communicated to the routing team (e.g., road construction, address changes, steps).
  • Deliver and pick-up product from schools, as scheduled, in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Secure and transport products to enable customers to receive a "Damage Free" fair.
  • Perform a daily pre-trip and post-trip inspection of the motor vehicle to which assigned.
  • Notify supervisor of any defects or problems.
  • Complete and maintain accurate and legible records in a timely manner, including DOT Logs, trip sheets, fuel tickets, road expenses, and other required paperwork.
  • Adhere to all Company, local, state, and federal rules/regulations, including DOT and OSHA.
  • Call the Regional/Branch office immediately upon the occurrence of any of the following:
  • Accident or damage to person(s) or property.
  • Problem with a school delivery or pick-up.
  • Mechanical failure of equipment.
  • Assist in completing warehouse tasks as required by the supervisor.
  • Perform overnight routes as necessary. Drivers will be provided with hotel accommodations and a meal allowance if required.
  • Maintain a professional appearance, including well-groomed hair, a clean uniform, and hygienic habits.
  • Attend monthly driver meetings and complete all continuous training materials as required.
  • Complete the annual Certificate of Violation Process timely, accurately, and honestly.
  • Utilize proper techniques for lifting, packing, and handling heavy objects, climbing ladders, and pushing/pulling display cases.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Maintain the truck per company standards.
  • Maintain regular attendance in accordance with the schedule.
  • Comply with the drug and alcohol-free policy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Scholastic utilizes on-board truck cameras in commercial vehicles to support safe driving practices. The camera system provides real-time feedback on vehicle and operating conditions and records data for training purposes. Drivers will be provided with training on this equipment and asked to provide consent to be recorded.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED Certificate preferred.
  • Verifiable commercial driving experience of at least one (1) year required.
  • Minimum of twenty-one (21) years of age.
  • Possess a valid CDL license with an air brake endorsement.
  • Must pass a drug screen/alcohol screen, Motor Vehicle Record review, criminal background review, and a DOT physical examination indicating essential job functions can be performed.
  • Must be able to drive a vehicle weighing up to 34,000 GVW.
  • Ability to lift/carry up to 70 lbs. and push, pull, lift, and handle metal/plastic cases weighing more than 350lbs on a regular and repetitive basis.

  • The FMCSA requires commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers to be able to read and speak English sufficiently to converse with the general public, understand highway traffic signs and signals, respond to official inquiries, and make entries on reports and records.

  • Strong team player with the ability to get along with co-workers.
