Job Description

Department: Product Development

Employment type: Full-time

$51k – $61k Design the covers that sell. Create the assets that convert. Make our books look undeniable. Every book lives or dies based on its cover. Every email lives or dies based on its visual hierarchy. Every social post lives or dies based on whether it stops the scroll. We need designers who understand that design isn't decoration — it's strategy. You'll work with our creative director, our marketing team, and our authors to create visual assets that are beautiful and effective. What you'll actually do: Book cover design. You'll design covers for children's books and adult nonfiction books. You'll understand the category (what design signals "parenting advice" vs. "narrative memoir" vs. "picture book"). You'll create designs that work on a physical shelf, in an email thumbnail, and on Amazon. You'll iterate based on feedback and testing. Launch campaign assets. Each book launch needs social graphics, email headers, landing page visuals, ad creative, and promotional materials. You'll create a cohesive visual identity for each campaign and execute across mediums. Brand and template development. As we scale, you'll identify opportunities to create reusable templates (email headers, social post templates, landing page components) that speed up future launches without looking templated. Collaboration with illustrators. For illustrated books (especially children's books), you'll work with illustrators. You'll provide art direction, review illustrations, ensure consistency, and know when an illustration needs revision. Design feedback and direction. You'll look at work from other designers, freelancers, and vendors. You'll give feedback that makes it better, articulate what's working and what isn't, and know when to push and when to step back. Rapid iteration. You'll create multiple design directions for stakeholder review. You'll be comfortable showing rough ideas, getting feedback early, and iterating quickly. Not everything needs to be perfect before it's reviewed. Technical skills. You'll work in Adobe Creative Suite (or equivalent). You'll understand file formats, color space, bleeds, and technical specs. You'll know what works for print vs. digital. What we're looking for: Commercial design sensibility. You understand that design serves a purpose. A beautiful design that doesn't sell is still a failure. You optimize for both aesthetics and function. Category and market awareness. You'll design differently for a children's picture book than for a business nonfiction book. You understand the visual language of different genres and you can execute across them. Strong design fundamentals. You know typography, color theory, hierarchy, and composition. You can articulate why a design works, not just that you like it. Efficiency without sacrificing quality. You can turn around designs quickly, but you know which details matter. You prioritize based on impact. Collaboration and feedback. Designers iterate. You'll get notes from creative directors, authors, and marketing teams. You'll understand the feedback, push back when necessary, and make the work better without ego. Bonus: Publishing or book design experience. Children's book design background. E-commerce or direct response design experience. Illustration direction experience. Typography expertise. Why you'd want this job: You get to design books that people hold and cherish. You'll see your work in the wild — on shelves, in social feeds, in inboxes. You'll work across mediums (print, digital, email, social) so you won't get bored. You'll see direct impact on sales and conversions. You'll collaborate with talented people (illustrators, creative directors, strategists). If you believe design matters and want to prove it in a commercial publishing context, this is it.
