Role overview
Chronicle Books is looking for a creative and savvy Assistant Editor to join the Art & Entertainment publishing group. This team acquires and publishes pop culture books, formats, and calendars across a wide range of non-fiction categories, focusing on titles that are contagious, thoughtfully designed, funny, and commercial.
The ideal candidate is a quick-thinking individual with a passion for pop culture and trends, who possesses many creative ideas, an interest in growing publishing relationships, and a clear vision for what makes a book irresistible.
Under the supervision of the Publishing Director, this Assistant Editor will provide editorial and project management support on a wide range of commercial books and formats, with a focus on key licensing relationships. They will also independently acquire or serve as the project editor for 6-8 books, calendars, and formats annually. The role contributes to creating a distinctive, innovative, and profitable list by generating ideas, conducting consumer research, and adding value. Building industry relationships and cultivating authors and other makers are also key aspects of this position, with a focus on entertainment publishing categories such as licensing, humor, brand- and trend-driven content, and pets.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate, track, and input corrections to manuscripts.
- Maintain title schedules.
- Generate title memo copy for tipsheets.
- Communicate with authors, artists, packagers, licensors, and literary agents.
- Research, evaluate, and respond to proposals.
- Track licensor approvals.
- Present proposals to publishing group meetings.
- Generate P&Ls and deal sheets.
- Lead creative meetings.
- Make offers.
- Monitor marketplace trends.
- Work collaboratively with department group members.
Requirements
- Minimum of three years’ publishing experience.
- Proven project management skills.
- Interest in licensing.
- Demonstrated skill in copywriting and written communications.
- Ability to represent the publishing director and executive editor in meetings.
- Ability to successfully manage details and tasks simultaneously.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Self-motivation and ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative group.
Compensation and Benefits
- Hiring Salary Range: $27.41 – $31.50/hr. This range will be determined by factors including, but not limited to, an applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and geographic location, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
- This position is eligible for our profit share plan.

Schedule
- Employees will follow a regular hybrid schedule in our San Francisco office, with at least three (3) in-office days per week and up to five (5) in-office days per week, depending on project and business needs.
